Fire Suppression, Prevention, and Natural Disaster Response Equipment
Comprehensive Strengthening of the Operational Mechanism
Effective response to natural disasters requires modern, sufficient, and specialized equipment at every level: mobility, fire suppression, rescue operations, personal protection, and logistical support.
This investment strengthens the Civil Protection operational mechanism as a whole, addressing needs in land transport, firefighting vehicles, rescue equipment, and support infrastructure.
Land Transport and Command Vehicles
The investment includes the procurement of:
- auxiliary SUV 4x4 C-class vehicles,
- executive E-class passenger vehicles,
- double-cab 4x4 pick-ups,
- 9-seat vans (4x2 and 4x4),
- 4x4 cargo vans,
- MPV personnel transport vehicles,
- buses with 22, 30, and 50 seats,
- 4x4 ambulances.
These assets enhance personnel mobility, operational coordination, and rapid deployment capabilities in the field.
Firefighting Vehicles
Fleet reinforcement includes:
- 1,000-liter urban firefighting tankers,
- narrow-width aerial platform vehicles,
- 12,000-liter water tankers,
- 20,000-liter water tankers,
- fuel tanker trucks.
This upgrade significantly increases firefighting capacity and strengthens operational autonomy in the field.
Flood and Water Incident Response Equipment
The investment includes:
- rafting boats,
- firefighting speedboats,
- submersible pumps,
- portable pumping units,
- high-capacity trailer-mounted pumps,
- 23 foldable Bailey bridges.
This equipment substantially enhances response to flood events and ensures continued access to affected areas.
Personal Protective and Rescue Equipment
Reinforcement includes:
- large and small rescue tool sets,
- breathing apparatus with cylinders,
- personal respiratory protection devices and accessories,
- filter face masks,
- PASS devices (Personal Alert Safety Systems),
- chemical protection suits,
- hazardous liquid protection suits,
- proximity firefighting suits,
- thermal imaging cameras,
- gas detectors,
- stretchers,
- door openers.
This equipment enhances personnel safety and improves response capability in complex and hazardous incidents.
Support and Logistics Equipment
As part of the overall upgrade, the following are included:
- air compressors,
- power generator units,
- forklifts,
- hoses and nozzles,
- smoke extraction fans,
- fire blankets.
Strengthening logistical support ensures operational continuity and effectiveness during prolonged emergency incidents.
Comprehensive Operational Upgrade
This investment does not concern isolated procurements, but a holistic upgrade of the country’s operational capability:
- increased mobility and faster deployment of forces,
- stronger firefighting capacity,
- more effective flood response,
- enhanced personnel safety,
- improved operational autonomy.
It represents a critical pillar in strengthening national resilience against the impacts of the climate crisis.
Budget and Funding
The AIGIS Project has a total budget of €2,077,494,365 dedicated to strengthening Civil Protection.
Funding is allocated across four main intervention pillars:
- 216.101.632€ – Infrastructure and facilities upgrades
- 346.264.004€ – Warning systems and prevention resources
- 193.091.652€ – Equipment and coordination support resources
- 1.322.037.079€ – Operational equipment and response assets
This investment falls primarily under the operational equipment pillar and is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility through the National Plan “Greece 2.0,” with resources from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
